Dublin is known for Georgian Architecture. Georgian is an architectural style that developed in England during the later half of the 18th century. The Georgian style is based on the classical architecture of Greece and Rome. It features proportion, balance, regularity, and symmetry, with limited decoration.

At the height of British rule, Dublin was a major European capital, and the British built many historic Georgian buildings for commerce and government.

Georgian influences were not only for grand public buildings, but were also applied to residential dwellings such as the many townhouses around Dublin that are either historically Georgian or in a Georgian style.
